The Chasteberry, whose scientific name is Vitex Agnus-Castus, comes from the labiates family, which is known mainly in the eastern Mediterranean region as a medicinal and spice plant. The shrub, which grows several metres high, is also commonly known as the chaste tree or the sweetheart's bedstraw. The names are derived from the following belief about the plant: In antiquity, it was believed that it could strengthen the innocence of monks and weaken the sex drive, but this has not been scientifically proven.
The very pungent taste of the chasteberry is very similar to that of real pepper, although the leaves are partly similar to those of the hemp plant or, during flowering, to the butterfly bush. The valuable ingredients of monk's pepper include essential oils, bicyclic diterpenes, oleic and linoleic acids and lipophilic flavonoids.
In combination preparations, these plant substances and the effect of Chastetree Berry Extract are often supplemented with the effects of women's mantle or black cohosh to achieve a balancing effect and positive effects in cases of menstrual cramps, period pains or PMS.
