The valencia peanut is the most common peanut grown. Planted in New Mexico this peanut is also recognized by the name “ballpark peanut”, whereby the raw red is roasted in the shell and cracked open to nibble on during a ball game. The small red skin nuts (up to four seeds per pod) very sweet, they are usually roasted make a delicious and colorful, nutty crunch.

These are smaller than the traditional Virginia peanuts, but pack a much sweeter taste. Wonderful to snack on, roast on your own, or for birds and squirrels. hese peanuts, grown almost exclusively in New Mexico, typically have three or more small dark-red to bright-red kernels in a long pod. Very sweet, they are usually roasted and sold in the shell. They are also excellent for fresh use as boiled peanuts. In the South, raw, unroasted peanuts are popular. These are often eaten right out of the shell, or they can be boiled in the shell and then eaten. At certain times of the year green peanuts, sometimes fresh from the field, are available. Because they spoil quickly, green peanuts are often sold boiled. Having three or more kernels per shell, the Valencia has a sweet flavor and is commonly used for all-natural peanut butter. Also, they are excellent for use as boiled peanuts. Valencia peanuts are grown mainly in Texas and New Mexico and account for less than one percent of U.S. production.
