More About Livermore Red Walnuts
First grown in 1978 by the University of California, Livermore walnuts are 100% naturally red-skinned and only grown in California. Less than 2% of the world's walnuts are Livermore reds. They're one of the rarest varieties on our planet.
Aside from their vibrant red color, Livermore reds are smaller but meatier than English or Black walnuts. A lower tannin content makes them less bitter while bringing out a creamy texture and natural walnut flavor. Many say they have a sweet and buttery taste.
Livermore walnuts are a wonderful snack, but they also add flair to salads or brighten up al-dente pastas. We like to include them in our pastries and ice creams. The bright red color makes the holidays even more festive during Christmas, NYE, or Valentine's day!
Walnuts are one of the world's top superfoods. They're packed with powerful nutrients like Omega-3's, Vitamin B6, and magnesium that have been linked to benefits such as:
- Promoting heart, bone, and brain health
- Lowering the risk of chronic inflammation and oxidative stress
- Reducing total and LDL cholesterol levels<
- Improving male reproductive health
- Supporting healthy skin and hair
In 2016, the United States Food Administration forrwarded this statement: "Supportive but not conclusive research shows that eating 1.5 ounces per day of walnuts, as part of a low saturated fat and low cholesterol diet and not resulting in increased caloric intake, may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease." The American Heart Association also gave walnuts the Heart Check certification.
Livermore reds might be healthier than other walnuts. Many suspect these walnuts have the highest antioxidant count of all nuts because their pigmentation is from anthocyanidins, which cause the skin color and antioxidant activities in superfoods.
Livermore red walnuts are one of California's hidden treats. Enjoy!
