Thyme (Herba Serpylli) In traditional medicine, thyme is used as an expectorant, antiseptic, and antibacterial agent for inflammations (catarrh) of the upper respiratory tract and for gastrointestinal problems like gastritis, stomach ulcers, colic, and diarrhea. The herb is also employed for nervous excitement, insomnia, headaches, and external use in the form of gargles for toothaches and inflammation of the oral mucosa, as well as in baths for joint and neuromuscular conditions (such as radiculitis, neuritis, myositis, etc.). Thyme poultices are recommended for various purulent skin inflammations. Proven Action The HMPC (European Medicines Agency's Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products) recognizes thyme as a traditional medicinal remedy. Additionally, ESCOP (European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy) and the German Commission E recommend its internal use for catarrh of the upper respiratory tract, bronchitis, and whooping cough. Externally (as a gargle), thyme is advised for inflammation of the oral cavity and as a remedy for bad breath. Preparation Method For internal use: 2 tablespoons of finely chopped thyme are infused in 500 ml of boiling water. The infusion is allowed to cool, and then it is strained. It is recommended to be consumed cold, 3-4 times a day at 50 ml each time. For external use (baths, gargles): 100 grams of thyme are infused in 2 liters of boiling water. The extract is allowed to cool, then strained and used as needed. Caution Thyme should not be administered to infants and young children up to the age of two, as it can cause respiratory distress (laryngospasm). As a precaution, it is not recommended for children up to four years of age. Rinses or baths with thyme extract are not recommended for severe skin injuries, open wounds, high fever, complex infections, circulatory disorders, and heart failure. To date, there is insufficient data regarding thyme consumption during pregnancy and breastfeeding, so it is not recommended.
