Six works belong to the Opusgruppe 9 - the first closed group of string quartets we know from Haydn.However, the composer also formed new ways here: if he was still based on the previous quantities of Opus 1 and 2, he was still on the fifth divertimento, he decided here in the future.He also used an extended sound space and experimented with metric surprise effects (e.g. in the trio of the menuett from the G major quartet)

Sechs Werke gehören zur Opusgruppe 9 – die erste geschlossene Gruppe von Streichquartetten, die wir von Haydn kennen. Doch auch formal ging der Komponist hier neue Wege: Orientierte er sich bei den vorangegangenen Quartetten Opus 1 und 2 noch am fünfsätzigen Divertimento, entschied er sich hier für die in Zukunft maßgebliche Form der Viersätzigkeit. Außerdem bediente er sich eines erweiterten Klangraums und experimentierte mit metrischen Überraschungseffekten (so z. B. im Trio des Menuetts aus dem G-dur-Quartett).
