What is Bubble Tea?

Bubble tea, also known as boba tea, is a delightful beverage originating from Taiwan in the 1980s. Its sweet, tea-based concoction often includes milk and is adorned with tapioca balls, giving it a unique texture and flavour. The name "bubble tea" and "boba tea" are used interchangeably depending on the region. There are various theories about its creation, ranging from being a Japanese iced coffee alternative to a fortuitous culinary experiment.

The hallmark of bubble tea is the tapioca pearls, chewy spheres made from tapioca flour, which come in various sizes and are typically served with a wide straw. What adds to its allure is the plethora of flavours available, including matcha, chocolate, peach, and mango, catering to diverse preferences.

For enthusiasts eager to recreate this indulgence at home, we'll explore three tantalising bubble tea recipes, ensuring everyone finds a favorite. Let's embark on this flavourful journey together!

How to Store Bubble Tea?

For prolonged enjoyment of bubble tea, heed these tips. Freshly made is best, especially for tapioca pearls. Cooked pearls can be stored in water for up to 3 hours before losing texture. It’s wise to make just enough boba or follow storage instructions for store-bought.

Preparing syrup and brewing tea ahead saves time, but limit refrigeration to 36 hours to prevent bitterness. Don’t put them in the fridge when they are still hot. Cool drinks before refrigerating to preserve taste.

Avoid keeping bubble tea in the fridge for more than half a day as pearls harden quickly. With homemade bubble tea, customise to your liking, from tea and milk variations to sweeteners. Enjoy the endless experimentation and exceptional taste!
