That means you can run XT as either a 1x system with a single chainring upfront without sacrificing your climbing gear, with a 2x system that offers far more versatile gearing options, or even a 3x with a low gear that would let you grind up almost a vertical wall if you needed to. But Shimano didn't just stick a big cog on the back of a 10-speed cassette. They carefully selected the cogs with their new Rhythm Step progression to ensure that the shifting feels balanced, smooth, and progressive, without any big or jarring jumps in the cassette.
