Iron bound to ferritin is readily available to meet the body's demands. Conventional iron supplementation, including forms such as ferrous sulfate, can cause GI side effects – including nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, and dark-colored stools – because these conventional forms are poorly absorbed.
