Yerba mate: a traditional drink which is on trend

Yerba mate is a traditional South-American drink, which is becoming increasingly popular in Europe and the United States. Rich in caffeine, mate is a healthy and natural drink, made from the dried leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis, a subtropical tree.

It has the stimulating effect of coffee and the healthy qualities of tea: that’s why it is more frequently considered as an alternative to those 2 drinks!

Griezmann, Messi, Obama, Pope François… famous people from all walks of life have fallen for this energising, detox drink.

Although it can be made in the same way as tea, mate is traditionally drunk in a mate gourd with a filtering metal straw called a bombilla.

Design 100% original, made in Portugal by a craftsman, a family little company.	Our bombilla Made from stainless steel, we chose it because of the design which stops the leaves getting into it and because it is easy to care for (wash by hand or in the dishwasher).	Our organic Yerba Mate 'The Original' It contains only high-quality leaves, with no debris, stems or branches, to bring you a mate which is not powdery or bitter, but has a subtle natural plant-based taste. Our mate leaves are certified from organic farming: they grown without the use of chemical products.

The development of the Origeens mate set

Developed with practicality and sustainability in mind

Our mate gourd combines modernity in its shape with tradition in its material.

We choose the clay, a micro-porous material that provides better insulation, as well as a narrow opening that allows for better heat retention. Its enamelling ensures that it is solid and easy to maintain: no need for the tedious cleaning required for traditional gourds, which can become mouldy. It is easy to wash by hand or in the dishwasher.

All of the mate set is assembled in France in Organisations to assist people through work by workers with disabilities.

Did you know? Except gourds which are usually of South American origin, gourds made of other materials are usually imported from China.

It is manufactured by a ceramic factory in Portugal: they are the experts in terms of ceramics know-how!

Did you know? Other than traditional calabashes from South American which are made from gourd, calabashes made from other materials are usually imported from China.

Prepare mate - the traditional way


Fill at least 1/4 of the gourd with mate.	Tilt the calabash so that the mate slides down one side. Moisten (cold or warm water) the leaves on the empty side.	Place the bombilla on the empty side.	Pour hot water (80°c max) on the empty side of the bombilla. Top up the water level during the day, without changing mate.

Our philosophy

We work with European suppliers whenever possible. The box is printed by a small French company. The mate gourd is made by a Portuguese craftsman (the European specialists in this field!)

Finally, the mate set is assembled in France by disabled workers.
