Despite its name, buckwheat has nothing to do with wheat: it's a cereal, and naturally gluten-free. Hatton Hill Organic’s buckwheat flakes are milled from the heart-shaped seeds of the buckwheat plant, which is part of the rhubarb family. They have a toasted, nutty flavour, and they're an excellent, gluten-free alternative to regular wheat. Buckwheat is believed to have been first cultivated more than 8,000 years ago in Southeast Asia. It was one of the first crops introduced to North America by early European settlers and is a staple food in much of Eastern Europe. Our organic buckwheat flakes make a simple, nutritious, delicious breakfast with fruit and a splash of non-dairy or dairy milk, although many people go a step further and make them into porridge, or add nuts and seeds to them to make granola. Buckwheat flake smoothie bowls are another nutritious and energising way to start the day. But the uses of our organic buckwheat flakes don't stop at the breakfast table. Our buckwheat flakes are brilliant in baking, adding crunch to homemade cookies, crackers and crumbles. Add them to flapjack and pie crust mixes. If you crush them up, our buckwheat flakes make a delicious, high-fibre crust for baked fish, chicken and vegetable dishes (croquettes are one of our favourites – try using some cheese!).
