The Facts of Lice

- Head lice are not able to jump, fly or swim. Only adult females move from head to head and do so by hanging off the hair shaft part way down and extending their front claws to grab any sweeping hair strands. The male and nymph (baby) louse stay on the scalp to feed.

- Head lice are not signs of unwashed or unclean hair. They are totally indiscriminate - clean hair, greasy hair, unwashed hair - they aren't fussy!

- Head lice do not live on pets and cannot live in your house (on the sofa, carpet, furniture, beds).

- Head lice are not like bed bugs - they don't burrow and hibernate.

- Head lice need blood to survive, if they don't get food, they perish within 48 hours.

- Head lice are not always detected by an itchy head. In fact, you only itch if you are allergic to their saliva when they bite!

- Lice eggs are transparent but their protective moist covering reflects the colour of nearby hair strands making them near impossible to see.

- Once hatched, the remaining white "nits" are empty eggshells, which will be visible in darker hair.

- Eggs and nits can only be removed by sliding them down the hair shaft and off (using a comb or tweezers). They cannot be dissolved in any way, because they are made of a similar protein to the hair (Keratin). Chemicals which destroy the egg would also damage the hair.

I know from personal experience how stressful head lice and nits are. However, head lice are not a sign of neglect or poor hygiene.

3 Straightforward Steps - How to apply NitNOT Anti Head Lice Serum treatment for complete success


Step 1 - Application We recommend that you watch our instruction video on how to use the NitNOT Eco Head Lice Treatment. You can find this on our NitNOT store, by clicking on the link at the top of the page. Ensure hair is dry and completely tangle free. The person applying the treatment should cover their hair, it can be an itchy job and the last thing you want to do is scratch your head and accidentally transfer a louse to your own head. As the treatment is oil based it is best to cover the shoulders of the person being treated and not to wear clothes that may stain from an oily substance. Your NitNOT Eco Head Lice Treatment is double sealed. Remove the nozzle from the bottle, the foil seal can then be removed, the nozzle screwed back on. Twist the nozzle for serum to flow out. For long or thick hair, divide and apply to the scalp. Apply along the section and then in lines through and down the hair.	Step 2 - Comb for coverage Once a treatment has been applied, comb through the hair with the nit comb or if the hair is very thick or coarse use a standard comb, ensuring every hair is covered and that there are no tangles or knots for lice and eggs to be missed. With shorter hair apply to the scalp and comb through hair thoroughly, ensuring the scalp and hair are wet with the serum. Then comb through to ensure there are not tangles or knots. DO NOT MASSAGE TREATMENT INTO HAIR AS THIS WILL CREATE KNOTS AND TANGLES FOR LICE AND EGGS TO HIDE. Leave for a minimum of twenty minutes. The treatment can be left on longer if it is a heavy infestation. While the treatment is still in the hair, this is an ideal time to use the nit comb to remove the nits and dead eggs.	Step 3 - Washing After two hours, wash the hair. We recommend using washing up liquid, such as Fairy, as it will remove the serum quickly in one or two washes. Then apply conditioner as normal. It is essential to treat the hair again seven or nine days later even if you cannot see anything moving. Baby lice are so small they can be easily missed. Check again after a further seven days. Clinical studies have shown that some eggs can take ten to thirteen days to hatch, though most do so within seven. It is always best to keep an eye on the hair, just in case you missed an area when applying the serum, especially when the head lice have been present for a few months. When we have just one member of the family with head lice I always treat everyone on the same day. I also recommend this at the clinic-families have very close contact, with hugs, snuggles on the sofa and bedtime stories - you get the picture! After washing hair always clean the bath or shower tray as treatments can create a slippery surface.

Breaking the life-cycle

The key to getting rid of head lice is breaking the life cycle. The female louse mates only once but can then lay up to 100 eggs in its 20-day life. Once laid, an egg takes about seven days to hatch and then ten days to become an adult.

Breaking the life cycle means we have to catch any eggs that may have been missed with the first application, before the nymphs become adults and lay more eggs. Every infestation, no matter how severe, requires a minimum of two treatments, seven days apart. If the infestation has been established for a considerably long time, ALWAYS treat after a further seven days with a third treatment.

Remember nits may still be visible in the hair if not combed out but are harmless as any unhatched lice will have been killed when treating. Always treat the whole family at the same time for each treatment and never share hairbrushes. One 200ml bottle of NitNOT Serum should be sufficient to treat the whole family twice over.

Head lice can be caught from hair to hair contact - not just head to head contact.
Children who are being treated for head lice can still attend school.

There is no need to treat clothing or bedding that has been in contact with lice by washing at high temperature or fumigating, as the lifespan of head lice is only 1–2 days once detached from a human head.
