JAMBU (SPILANTHES OLERACEA) - The vegetable jambu has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties. It´s main components are spilanthol, a fatty acid amide (N-isobutylamides), stigmasteryl-3-O-b-D-glucopyranoside and a number of triterpenes. The active ingredient spilanthol is proposed to be responsible for most of its biological activities. Spilanthol has a strong pungent taste; it may produce local astringency and anesthetic effects. Its economic potential includes its use in pharmaceuticals, as a nutritional supplement and beauty care cosmetics.

ECOLOGY

The jambu is an Amazonian leaf vegetable, has a 45-70 day cycle, requires little technology for its planting and is widely grown by small farmers.

Tonkabean - Dipteryx odorata - Synonym: Cumaru

The odor of the tonka bean oil (Dipteryx odorata) is peculiar and ascribed to a crystallized, active ingredient known as coumarin, having a pleasant smell (resembling vanilla), with a bitter taste.

Besides its fragrant properties, coumarin is also used as a fixing essence and widely used for this purpose in perfumery. Moreover, it serves as an ingredient in soap-making.

ECOLOGY

The tonka bean is a large tree species that grows up to 30 m high into the upper canopy of jungles throughout the Amazon region. Its wood and seeds obtain a high commercial value.

The fruit of the tonka bean comprises 80% woody bark and 20% kernel, which in turn contains up to 43,60% of a yellow, aromatic oil. Thirty kg of seeds yields around one liter of oil.

CUPUAÇU BUTTER - SYNONYM: CUPUAZU

The cupuaçu butter (Theobroma grandiflorum) offers fantastic properties for the cosmetic industry. The cupuaçu butter is a triglyceride that presents a balanced composition of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, which gives the product a low melting point (approximately 30 °C) and an appearance of a soft solid that penetrates quickly in contact with the skin. The cupuaçu butter possesses a high capacity power to absorb water, approximately 200% higher than that of lanolin, acting as a plant-based substitute for it (see below graphic). It contains phytosterols (especially beta-sitosterol) that operate at the cellular level regulating the water balance and the activity of lipids of the superficial layer of the skin. The high power of absorbing water of the cupuaçu butter can be attributed to the hydrogen bridges formed between the water molecules and phytosterols. Phytosterols have been used to treat dermatitis and disorders by stimulating the healing process.

ECOLOGY

The cupuaçu, native of the Amazon region, is a small tree with 4 to 8 meters (when cultivated) or up to 18 m high (as wild growing individuals in the native forest) and belongs to the same family of the cacao. The fruit is very large, cylinder-shaped with rounded ends, up to 30 cm in length with an average weight of 1.2 kilograms. At maturity, the fruits fall without the stalk when they start releasing the characteristic odor, which indicates the perfect ripening of them. The fruit contains a juicy and creamy pulp with characteristic flavor which is adhered to 20 to 30 large oval seeds. The butter of cupuaçu, similar to the “butter” of cacao, but with superior quality, is extracted from the seeds that contain approximately 45% of butter. The production in commercial plantations will begin from the 3rd year and reach an average of 12 fruits per tree. It is recommended the planting of 180 plants per hectare, which can produce 2148 fruits, representing 990 kg of pulp and 443 kg of seeds (an average the fruit is composed of 38.4% of pulp, 17.2% of seeds and 44.4% of skin). In general, with 1,000 kg of fresh seeds, 135 kg of butter from cupuaçu can be produced.

PRACAXI OIL

Pracaxi oil (Pentaclethra macroloba) obtains with 19% the highest known concentration of Behenic acid, 6 times higher than that of peanut oil that is extracted and used in the cosmetics industry in products of make-up and hair due to its excellent moisturizing properties.

Pracaxi oil is a unique ingredient with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal properties and used for a variety of dermatological conditions including skin spots, severe acne, treatment of scars and burns.

The appearance of natural products like pracaxi oil is a new option to replace petrolatum in hair care. The disclosure of active compounds such as pracaxi oil with more than 20% of long-chain fatty acids like the behenic acid (C 22:0) can be transformed into ceramides. Nowadays this presents a great option for hair products which do not want to apply products based on petrolatum. Small small amounts of this oil applied to the hair has the so-called “Cinderella effect,” removing the frizz immediately.

A plant species which is distributed throughout Northern Brazil, Guyana, Trinidad and some regions of Central America. The tree is medium in size (8 – 14 m), found in the flooded areas and form half-moon shaped fruit pods with 20 to 25 cm in size containing between 4 to 8 seeds. Approximately 35 pods are needed to obtain one kilo of seeds, which contain approximately 30% of oil on a dry basis. The emergence occurs between 30 to 40 days and the germination rate of seeds is relatively high, its development in the floodplain is fast. On terra firme land tolerates well selective pruning and as nitrogen-fixing pioneer species, it shows great potential for forest regeneration and restoration of degraded areas.
