mikki grooming stripping knife fine coat hair spaniel setter stainless steel blade

Product overview

Stripping knives allow you to achieve the look of a handstripped coat without the pain and discomfort associated with prolonged handstripping.

  • Fine teeth ideal for blending and finishing or for dogs with a thinner coat
  • Teflon coated blade to reduce static build up
  • Ergonomic handle to help reduce grooming fatigue

How to use

* Begin by holding the stripping knife with the smooth side of the blade facing you.
* With your other hand, hold the skin taut close to the area you are going to strip; this will make the procedure more comfortable for your dog.
* Follow the grain of your dog’s coat, use a combing action to catch the hair between the serrated teeth.
* Hold the hair in place with your thumb and remove the hair by gently pulling in the direction of the lay of the coat.
* Use an arm and shoulder pulling movement, rather than a wrist action to ensure you pull out the hairs rather than cut them with the knife.
* Work methodically through your dog's coat, a section at a time until the entire outer coat has been removed.
* By hand stripping every 4-6 weeks, you will achieve a "rolled coat", where the hairs fit neatly into each other, and the coat becomes flatter and coarser.

5 Steps to Grooming Success - By Mikki

  1. The first step is to check your dog from top to bottom checking their ears, eyes, nose, coat and nails. This is the part where you should make sure there are no irregular lumps or bumps on their bodies and remove all ticks and fleas.
  2. Grooming out is necessary to remove knots and tangles. However, if the dog is smooth coated gentle grooming products such as the grooming gloves come in handy, allowing you to gently stroke your dog down whilst spending some quality time pampering them. For long or double coated breeds any undercoat and moulting issues should be dealt with. You also need to eliminate any big knots or tangles at this stage.
  3. Bath time! Lather up and shampoo your dog using a product designed specifically for their coat or skin type. This is where Mikki shines, boasting an extensive range. When bath time is over make sure you dry your dog’s coat thoroughly by blow drying on a low heat or leaving to stand dry.
  4. Use the Mikki Scissors, perfect for trimming down and tidying up, to follow the style or ‘design’ for your specific breed of dog. Our Ear & Face Care Kit is perfect for trimming unwanted hair out of eyes and around ears to help keep them clear and infection free. The rounded tips offer extra safety when trimming around these sensitive areas. If your dog is wire coated, use a Mikki Stripping Knife to help you strip the coat and keep their wiry texture while tidying up their appearance.
  5. Dogs aren't usually the biggest fans of having their nails cut, hence the reason this exercise is often left until last! To avoid the risk of stressing them use Mikki's Nail Clippers which have guards, ensuring you don't cut too close to the quick. Finally use the Nail File to smooth any rough edges and complete your pet’s pawdicure!
