Grooming

Long-hair usually requires daily brushing to prevent matting and tangling
Medium length hair may be prone to matts and tangles so a thorough groom weekly is recommended
Short-hair can go up to a month in-between grooming if dead hair is removed daily during moulting

Regardless of hair type, try to groom your pet as often as possible as this will allow them to enjoy being handled and can give an early warning of any signs of ill health such as skin sores, flaky skin, rashes, cuts, bumps and bruises. Grooming your pet on a daily basis will benefit not only the shine on their coat but also improve their overall well-being.

For all coats

Neaten up your pets coat by cutting away any stray hair and brushing it through leaving their coat tidy.

The heat treated, stainless steel blades are designed to retain their sharp edges; a long lasting product designed for continual use with precise cutting blades for great results.

Grooming

If your pet has had a bad experience or they often get tangles in their coat, grooming can make them nervous. Keep yourself calm. If you are anxious your pet will certainly pick up on it. Create a relaxed environment and begin by getting your pet comfortable with you stroking them. Many pets are very food-motivated so use this to tempt and reward them. Also praise with an encouraging and reassuring tone of voice. Do a little at a time with each small step offering a reward. Groom your pet regularly – it’s a great way to check over your pet to see that they are in tip top condition. Check their eyes and ears feeling for any cuts, lumps or bumps which shouldn’t be there. If you know what is “normal” you will easily spot something when it’s wrong. Keep your grooming sessions little and often at the beginning until you both get more used to them.

5 Steps to Grooming Success - By Mikki

The first step is to check your dog from top to bottom checking their ears, eyes, nose, coat and nails. This is the part where you should make sure there are no irregular lumps or bumps on their bodies and remove all ticks and fleas.
Grooming out is necessary to remove knots and tangles. However, if the dog is smooth coated gentle grooming products such as the grooming gloves come in handy, allowing you to gently stroke your dog down whilst spending some quality time pampering them. For long or double coated breeds any undercoat and moulting issues should be dealt with. You also need to eliminate any big knots or tangles at this stage.
Bath time! Lather up and shampoo your dog using a product designed specifically for their coat or skin type. This is where Mikki shines, boasting an extensive range. When bath time is over make sure you dry your dog’s coat thoroughly by blow drying on a low heat or leaving to stand dry.
Use the Mikki Scissors, perfect for trimming down and tidying up, to follow the style or ‘design’ for your specific breed of dog. Our Ear & Face Care Kit is perfect for trimming unwanted hair out of eyes and around ears to help keep them clear and infection free. The rounded tips offer extra safety when trimming around these sensitive areas. If your dog is wire coated, use a Mikki Stripping Knife to help you strip the coat and keep their wiry texture while tidying up their appearance.
Dogs aren't usually the biggest fans of having their nails cut, hence the reason this exercise is often left until last! To avoid the risk of stressing them use Mikki's Nail Clippers which have guards, ensuring you don't cut too close to the quick. Finally use the Nail File to smooth any rough edges and complete your pet’s pawdicure!
