Live Locusts

Live Locusts

The most popular live food in the UK for reptiles. Ideal for larger lizards such as Bearded Dragons and Yemen Chameleons. Packed full of protein and packed fresh daily.

Live Locusts

Livefoods4u Locusts Live Food

The Perfect Staple Diet

Scientifically known as Schistocerca Gregaria, Desert Locusts are now one of the most common species of live food in the UK. The larger locusts are particularly good for lizards such as Bearded Dragons, whilst the smaller locusts are ideal for Leopard Geckos. Also popular among arboreal lizard keepers such as Chameleons as they love to climb. Locusts are an ideal food as they do not escape terrariums easily and do not bite like some other insect foods. They are available in a range of sizes and pack sizes too.

Locust Care

Locusts should be transferred to a well ventilated container of appropriate size, and held at 25 °C. They should have access to high quality insect food such as ProRep Bug Grub, and a small amount of leafy greens each day such as spring greens or kale. Offer a source of hydration such as ProRep bug gel. Before feeding to your animal please gut load, or dust with appropriate vitamin supplements.

Summary

Available all year round, in a wide range of sizes and pack sizes, locusts make the perfect livefood for a wide variety of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.

Live Food in the cold Weather

  • Unpack the outer boxes immediately
  • Carefully lay out all pre-packs so that air can circulate around them
  • Place the pre-packs in a warm dry room (15-25 degrees centigrade)
  • Do not apply external heat
  • For bags hold the bag horizontally and gently “shuffle” then leave to recover slowly in a warm room
  • Full recovery may take up to 4 hours so please allow your insects plenty of time

A Nutritious Live Food

Locusts are an excellent source of high-quality protein for reptiles; containing essential amino acids, they are also a good source of vitamins and minerals, particularly B12 and iron. Containing fibre, low in fat and carbohydrates they are a great all-rounder live food. Contains 73.2% moisture, 0.04% fat, 0.04% calcium, 15.9% protein, and 0.19 Ca:P Ratio.

A Great Choice for Special Diets

Locusts are a great choice of live food for any lizard but many of their benefits make them the perfect choice for reptiles needing a bit more care. Low in fat and carbohydrates, they are perfect for reptiles who are on a controlled diet. The exoskeleton of locusts is relatively thin and easy for reptiles to digest, easier for nutrient absorbtion and good for reptiles with sensitive digestive systems. Slower moving than some other live food, therefore easier to catch, locusts are a good choice for older or injured reptiles. Always seek advice from your vet.

Encouraging Natural Behaviours

Feeding locust to reptiles can help improve their overall health and well-being. Most reptiles are predators by nature, wired to hunt and capture their prey. Live locusts give them an opportunity to engage in natural behaviours, keeping them mentally simulated, and a chance to get regular exercise. Without the chance to engage in these behaviours, reptiles can become bored and lethargic, leading to health issues.

An Attractive Choice for Your Reptiles

A great live food option that offers many advantages. Being vegetarian they aren't very aggressive, only biting when threatened. This is important as if left with your reptiles for a short period of time they won't hurt them. They are also an attractive colourful species which can interest and motivate lazier reptiles. Offered in sizes from Hatchling to Adult (5mm-80mm), they are a favourable choice for many different reptiles.

Bearded Dragon Live Food Locusts

Tarantula Eating Locust

Chameleon Eating Live Locust

The Staple Livefood for Bearded Dragons

Juvenile Bearded Dragons will love our Small Locusts. As your Bearded Dragon ages, it should move through the locust sizes until it's adult, when our Extra Large Locusts should become it's staple live food. We highly recommend locusts are fed as part of a wider diet, since Bearded Dragons should always eat a variety of livefood and vegetation to fulfil their nutritional requirements.

Perfect for Tarantulas

Locusts are a common favourite among Tarantula and Invert keepers as locusts are slower moving and less likely to bite than other livefood options. Furthermore, locusts are a nutritionally excellent food source for invertebrates, packed with protein and featuring a soft exoskeleton.

Well Suited to Arboreal Lizards such as Chameleons

Locusts love to climb, and as Adults, they can also fly. This makes them the ideal food for lizards such as Yemen or Veiled Chameleons, Panther Chameleons and larger arboreal geckos such as Tokay Geckos. An adult Yemen Chameleon is certainly able to chow down on an Adult Locust.
