A complete culture of flightless fruitflies in a pre-packed tub containing culture medium, eggs, larvae and pupa. The culture will continue to produce new flies for several weeks and should be kept at normal room temperature. They might have adult flies in the culture but often they don't! New flies will emerge given time.

Drosophilia melanogaster will reach a max size of 2.5mm and are an ideal prey item for small amphibians such as Ranitomeya and Mantellas, small invertebrates and other small reptiles. A complete culture of flightless fruitflies in a pre-packed tub containing culture medium, eggs, larvae and pupa. The culture will continue to produce new flies for several weeks and should be kept at normal room temperature. Warmer temperatures will speed up development but may shorten the lifespan of the culture.

Live Food Care

Both the hatched flies, and the culture comes with everything needed, although more fruit can be added to the culture once all hatched to prolong the shelf life. Keep at room temperature.

What does the culture come with

The culture of flightless fruit flies contains eggs, larvae and pupa. The culture will continue to produce new flies for several weeks and should be kept at normal room temperature. There may or may not be ready hatched flies.

What species of fly are Livefoods4u Live Fruit Flies

We offer two species. Drosophila hydei are the larger of the two, and Drosophila melanogaster (Golden Fruit Flies) are the smaller species.

What nutrition do they provide

Drosophila fruit flies are an excellent source of easily digestible protein. They also contain essential amino acids, and vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, vitamin D, and vitamin E, as well as calcium, iron, and zinc.

Which species of fly is best for me

If you keep very small species, such as Ranitomeya or Mantella frogs, or hatchling Mourning Geckos and spiderlings, then the Golden Fruit Flies may be best. Our normal fruit flies are suited to slightly larger species of Poison frog or Day gecko.
