Krill

Krill are small, approx. 5-6cm big shrimp-like crustaceans and belong to the genus of luminous crabs. They occur in large shoals in the ocean and feed on microscopic phytoplankton (plant plankton). Krill itself serves as food for larger marine life, e.g. Whales, sharks and seals.

Krill stands at the bottom of the food chain. Therefore krilloil is less contaminated with pollutants and heavy metals than fish oil.

Our krill oils are obtained exclusively by cold extraction in a complicated and patented process. This method is far more gentle on the active ingredient than conventional hot- or cold pressing.

Krill oil nutrients

It is the preferred source of essential fatty acids (EFA), including the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA is required for many metabolic functions, including the starting material for the formation of DHA and eicasanoids (immune system, blood clotting, regulation of blood pressure and heart rate).

DHA is an integral part of nerve cells and is particularly enriched in the brain and retina.

The specialty of Krill Omega-3 fatty acids is that they are bound to phospholipids, a class of lipids that are a main component of all cell membranes. Phospholipids support the distribution of omega-3 fatty acids in the body, which means that it is better absorbed by the body (higher bioavailability) than all other omega fatty acid sources.

Choline contributes to the maintenance of normal liver function, as well as normal fat and homocysteine metabolism. EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function.

Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin is a natural dye that is responsible for the red color of the krill and is considered an antioxidant. Various researches have shown that the dye astaxanthin has up to a hundred times more activity than an antioxidant than all previously known active ingredients.

Astaxanthin has a cell-protecting effect and can ward off free radical attacks on the cells.

The esterified astaxanthin in our krill oil is bound to the EPA/DAH phospholipids and can increase its antioxidant effect directly in the cells.

Krill fishing and manufacturing
