Reptiles are cold blooded animals and cannot heat their bodies on their own. They rely on external heat sources to do this, so when setting up a vivarium you must supply a source or heat such as a basking bulb or heat mat.

It is just as important for the reptile to be able to escape from heat, as by moving in and out of the heat reptiles are able to maintain a perfect body temperature.
