Pebernødder is thought to be the oldest Christmas cookie in Denmark. The name translates to 'Pepper nuts', and used to be a description of the biscuits; the little biscuits were as hard as nuts and well seasoned - "to pepper" meant "to season". Of course, pepper is one of the ingredients in these little biscuits. The Pebernødder we eat today have a lots of warming spice with a nice sweetness, and they are brittle and crunchy rather than hard.
