Our Process


Filling the ponds We fill our ponds with clear, mineral-rich sea water from Loch Snizort. This is done by pumping water via a hose to the polytunnels through a pre-filter to clear the water any particles of seaweed and sediment.	Evaporating We use only the sun and the wind to evaporate the water in the ponds to leave pure crystals. The sun evaporates the seawater and the wind clears the saturated air from the polytunnel allowing the evaporation process to continue. This process is totally weather dependent and can take as little as three and up to six weeks depending on the mix of sun and wind.	Hand harvesting Once the water has evaporated, we hand harvest the salt by literally sweeping it up.


Drying The salt is then laid out on shelves in the drying polytunnel to drain and dry.	Sorting Once the salt crystals have been dried, it is then hand sorted so that it is perfect.	Packing The salt is then hand packaged into our tubs ready to be distributed to our lovely customers.

About us

The Isle of Skye Sea Salt Company was set up with the aim of producing a top quality, gourmet sea salt, with minimum impact on the beautiful environment of the Isle of Skye. We have developed a unique solar evaporation process that harnesses the sun and the wind to evaporate the water that sits in ponds within polytunnels beside Loch Snizort. This very natural process and the provenance of our location on Skye has allowed us to produce a premium quality sea salt with a distinct taste and texture.

When we started the business, we were the only sea salt producers in the UK to make the salt using this process and within two years of production, we began winning awards with the most recent being in 2021. These awards are an endorsement of the years of research and hard work undertaken to achieve our ambition.

Harnessing the power of the sun and wind to make sea salt is a slow natural process, but one that has earned international recognition. We were very pleased to be one of the few Scottish food producers to be nominated to receive the accolade of being entered into the International Slow Food Movement 'Ark of Taste', which recognises producers who seek to resurrect and reimagine traditional local foods.
