Iodine (I) French scientist Barnard Courtois in 1811. Iodine was named after the Greek word for violet, 'iode', because Iodine produces a distinctive violet vapour. We categorise Iodine as an essential trace nutrient, which means it cannot be formed in the body. Iodine can be found in non-organic milk, seafood, crustaceans, vegetables grown on and cattle reared on Iodine rich soils. The most Iodine dense sources of Iodine are Nori, Dulse, Wakame and Kelp. Iodine is eseential in the body, it is required for thyroid health and hormone production. Thyroid hormones include T4-Thyroxine and T3-tri-iodothyronine, their role is to promote nutrient metabolism, growth, and boost the basal metabolic rate (BMR). Without Iodine we would not be able to produce T3 and T4 hormones. The availability of Iodine will dictate the volume of thyroid hormones produced. Studies have shown it can have great effect on growth of children and general cognitive function. Lastly, sufficient Iodine can help maintain the normal health of the skin.
