Symptoms of Colic

A colicky baby can be very distressing for everyone in the house. Listening to long periods of crying can leave you feeling tired, stressed and emotionally drained. Despite the intensity of your baby’s cries, it is important to remember that colic is not a serious medical condition.

What is colic?

Infant colic is a common condition, affecting around 1 in 5 infants in the UK in their first month of life. However, it is not a serious medical condition and usually resolves by the age of 3-4 months. Despite medical research, no one is certain what causes infant colic. A likely explanation may be the build-up of trapped wind in your baby’s bowel causing pain and discomfort.

Treating the signs of nappy rash

• Change your baby’s nappy every time it becomes wet or soiled to prevent prolonged contact with harsh chemicals

• Make sure your baby’s nappy fits well and is not chafing or rubbing

• Avoid using soaps, detergents or bubble bath that could irritate the affected area

• Ensure your baby’s skin is clean and dry

Nappy rash is an irritation of the skin caused by contact with wee and poo in a nappy. It starts with a slight reddening of the skin in the nappy area and can progress to soreness and discomfort.
