Hot Weather & Heat Exhaustion

Increase in body temperature, and to cool yourself causes you to sweat more. This loss of fluid through sweating leaves you dehydrated feeling thirsty, tired and fatigued.

Warmer or dry climates, closer proximity to the equator and higher altitudes may all factor into your need for rapid rehydration.

Other signs of dehydration are headaches, muscle cramps and decreased urination. Pinching the skin over the back of the hand or abdomen shows skin turgor. Mild dehydration will cause the skin to be slightly slow in its return to normal.

Travel

It is incredibly easy to become dehydrated whilst traveling. The excitement of a fast-paced trip often causes travellers to ignore signs of dehydration. The back of the hand 'pinch test' is a good indicator but the reasons are numerous and can occur when water is not readily available. Long car, rail or air travels can also result in dehydration. The pressure in an aircraft cabin is tightly controlled resulting in low humidity ~ 10-20% compared to the usual 30-60%. This causes moisture to evaporate from the body quicker leaving you with physical dryness of the eyes, skin, nose and mouth, and internally too affecting metabolic functions.
