How did we get our start

John V. Holmquist wanted to take advantage of the Northwest's rich soil and mild weather. He found that hazelnut trees were an excellent crop to work with.

How many hazelnuts can I eat a day While you can eat as many hazelnuts as your heart desires, a healthy daily intake of nuts is 30 grams or about 20 hazelnuts. If you're trying to measure out quickly, a small handful will usually suffice. If you're heard of an apple a day keeping the doctor away, a handful of hazelnuts will have similar results. Why are hazelnuts also called Filbert nuts According to the most widely believed story, it's due to the feast day of the French saint, St. Philbert. This celebration falls on August 20th which happens to be the same time hazelnuts are ready to be harvested.	When are the hazelnuts harvested The hazelnuts are harvested in September and October and from there we wash/dry them, clean them, sort them and grade them for market. The "new crop" is typically offered at the beginning of the New Year unless we have some prior crop we still need to sell first.

What's important to know about storing hazelnuts

When it comes to storing hazelnuts, a good rule of thumb is that the more a nut has been processed (roasted, chopped, sliced, ground), the shorter the shelf life will be.

If you want to keep your hazelnuts fresh for longer, you can freeze them in airtight containers away from foods with strong odors. They will keep for over a year in the freezer, 1 year in the fridge, and 3-6 months in a pantry. If you do freeze your hazelnuts, bring them back to room temperature and use them immediately.
