GLOSSARY
- EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids that are abundant in fish, shellfish, and some algae. The body needs omega-3s to develop and function optimally in every stage of life.†
- DPA (docosapentaenoic acid) is the third most abundant omega-3 in fish oils. We have heard this omega-3 called “the missing omega” because many fish oil products do not include this crucial nutrient in their finished good. DPA has always been a part of the whole-food matrix of natural fish oils. When we eat wild caught salmon for example, we are getting large amounts of this omega-3. Most fish oil supplements use conventional processing which strips out the natural presence of this crucial nutrient.
- Specialized Pro-Resolving Mediators (SPMs) are anti-inflammatory compounds derived from omega-3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA). The mechanism of how this nutrient works is quite simple. In fact, the answer is in its name: pro-resolving = Protecting and Resolving inflammation. This is exactly what this compound has been found to do: resolve inflammation.†
