Friendly Soap was formed in 2008 by close friends Geoff Kerouac and Rob Costello. The pair always had a strong ethical leaning. They also shared an instinctive love of the natural world, inspired by their stunning Pennine surroundings. They wanted to produce a range of rigorously ethical high-quality products. In Friendly Soap, they seem to have managed just that.

After working together for years at a food co-operative, we saw an opportunity to start our own ethical soap company in 2008. It was just the two of us for years. Today, we take a very hands-on approach to running the business, and we employ people in a variety of roles.

We created Compact by Design to identify products that, while they may not always look very different, have a more efficient design. With the removal of excess air and water, products require less packaging and become more efficient to dispatch. At scale, these small differences in product size and weight lead to significant carbon emission reductions.

The finely cut lavender leaves in our perennially popular Lavender Soap actually work as an exfoliant, complementing the essential oil for a soak that’s deeply cleansing as well as wonderfully relaxing. Just don’t fall asleep in the bath, please. Each Lavender bar is handmade with Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Olive Oil, Lavender essential oil and Lavender flowers. You won’t find even the smallest smidgen of palm oil, preservatives or sulphates in any of our soaps; all we add is a feel-good factor. Our plastic-free boxes are recycled and recyclable, and we’re also registered with The Vegan Society and Cruelty-Free International. We’ve even earned a ‘Best’ rating with Ethical Consumer, so you can enjoy a spotlessly clean conscience.
