What are Umeboshi Plums


Umeboshi Plums are pickled ume plums made from a young sour fruit, called ume, which is a cross between an apricot and a plum. These originated in northern China about 2,000 years ago, spread throughout Asia, and were brought over to North America in the 1870s. The common name is Japanese Plum, and ours are grown on our Forest Farmstead property.	The produce is picked when they are still slightly green on the inside and barely starting to ripen. You know they're perfect for pickling when the skin is a light purple blush color! Late spring to early summer is typically when the plums are ready to be harvested.	The plums are then naturally fermented with sea salt. Our packer is local, which means that our Umeboshi Plums have a minimal impact on the environment.	This unique delicacy seamlessly blends umami, saltiness, and subtle floral aromas in a single plum. A little goes a long way - Umeboshi is often served with rice in order to tone down the intense flavors. You'll soon find yourself constantly reaching for a bit of this special ingredient to add a bunch of excitement to a variety of dishes.

Tucked away in the North Cascade mountains is a temperate rain forest, orchard, garden, and livestock farm that make up the Forest Farmstead. We sustainably manage our forest by improving our homestead's productivity, diversity, and ability to host others in order to fully appreciate the land. Terrance, the second-generation owner, is a renewable energy engineer with experience in agriculture and uses his knowledge to pursue new organic and sustainable methods to share with the farm's visitors.

Jim and Harlyn Meyer had already been involved in building the Organic Foods Movement for 25 years when, in 1996, they had a chance to buy land of their own to build a family farmstead. Nestled between untouched wilderness and the mighty Skagit River, Forest Farmstead has since grown to be an admirable example of humans and the forest working together in a sustainable and mutually beneficial manner. In 2015, when the Meyers retired and their son Terrance and his family took over, Forest Farmstead became recognized as the only certified organic forest in Washington State.
