Soap nuts are the harvested fruit from the Reetha tree. They are also called soap berries, soapnut berries and reetha nuts. The fruit is harvested and left to dry naturally leaving the fruit to harden, forming a shell which resembles a nut. The trees can grow up to 15 metres and have been used for hundreds of years as a washing detergent in India and Nepal. The soap nut shells contain Saponins - a natural surfactant which acts similar to soap by forming a soapy texture when in contact with water. Suitable for your washing machine Around 1kg of soap nuts can be used for up to 400 washes Tips: No fabric softeners needed Works with delicate fabrics eg silk and wool If heavy stains, we recommend adding one tablespoon of stain remover For a fragrance, add your favourite essential oils Soap nut remains can be composted or disposed of through organic refuse Directions: Laundry: Place 4-7 soap nut shells in the bag provided and tie Put in the washing machine with your laundry and run your normal program At the end of the wash remove the bag of soap nuts and allow to dry Hand Soap Wash: Add 10 soap nut shells to 1L boiling water and simmer for 10 minutes. Leave to cool and pour into bottles as required. Can also be used as soapnut shampoo - follow the instructions for soap nuts liquid.
