Why I Invented Downtown Diamonds
My Shooting Philosophy
First let me try to eliminate arguments by saying that there are various methods that players use to target the basketball rim and to some degree each can be successful.
There is one concept that all coaches and players agree with - You Must Target The Rim To Be A Successful Scorer. Some coaches advocate aiming to the back of the rim, some to the center of the rim, and some even aim at the net below the rim.
I believe the front of the rim provides the most efficient target because it requires that the part of the ball that lays on the players finger tips be launched on an arc just past the part of the rim that is nearest to the player. Other philosophies try to move a spot 12" from the fingers to another spot 18" farther from the player.
The body is controlled by the neuromuscular system which gets instructions from the brain. When performing a complicated movement like shooting a basketball, the first thing that must be analyzed is proper direction and distance. Without this information, very good shooting form can launch a ball that doesn't even come close to the rim. We've all seen it before. Worse is the player that shoots all night long and just misses but still can't get the bell thru the net, and doesn't know why he or she is missing those shots.
Most accomplished players miss shots due to failure of the eyes to establish a specific target so that the brain can send the precise signals thru the neuromuscular system for everything else to perform successfully.
Detour Downtown Diamonds are placed around the rim for full court visibility and to train players to aim precisely at them or at net hangers.
This training device is fundamental to basketball instruction and will help players develop more quickly and with longer lasting skills.
