Make Your Own Custom Succulent Garden

It's easy -- and fun -- to make your own personalized succulent displays! Because these plants come in so many shapes, sizes, and colors, you can mix and match in your favorite container to get a look all your own. Here's how! Start by gathering your materials: A container, your plants, and potting mix. Then fill your planter with the potting mix. It's helpful to look for a container that will allow excess water to escape so you don't accidentally drown your plants if they get too wet. Succulents hate staying wet, so if you tend to overwater, look for a soil mix with a lot of perlite or sand that dries out quickly. Next, make a hole about the size of the pot in the center of the container and drop in your tallest succulent. Repeat with more plants as you work your way from the center of the planter to the edge.

Mix Colors & Textures

Get the best look from mixing plants of different colors and textures together. Plant broad, flat-leaves succulents such as echeveria alongside the colorful, round leaves of portulacaria. After you take your succulents out of their grower’s pots you may notice that a few of them have a tightly packed root ball. Use your fingers to gently loosen the roots before you drop the plant into the soil. This will encourage them to put out new growth.

Space Properly

Although you might be tempted to pack your succulents so closely together you can't see the soil, it’s important to give each plant breathing room so it can spread as it grows. Space the plants about 2 to 3 inches apart. This way the container has a finished look right off the bat, but the plants still have room to fill in. Always water your succulents right after you plant them. This helps eliminate air pockets around their roots and gives them a well-deserved drink after being transplanted. Once settled in their new home, succulents prefer being watered whenever the soil feels dry to the touch.

Find the Sun & Watch Them Grow

Succulents are sun worshippers. Place your new garden in a spot that gets lots of bright light. Indoors, that's a spot where the plants cast a strong shadow at least 3 hours per day. Outdoors, it's a location that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunshine a day. Because most succulents are not cold hardy, you will want bring them indoors and set them in a sunny room before first frost if you display your succulent garden outdoors and live in a cold-winter area. It won't take long for succulents to grow and fill in the open spots between them. Leave the container in the full sun and watered whenever the soil felt dry to the touch.

How To Water Most succulents would rather be too dry than too wet, so take care not to overwater. In most homes, these plants need watering only once every 2 or 3 weeks. Tip: Insert a wood toothpick in the drainage hole at the bottom of the pot. If it comes out clean, your plant may need water. If it comes out with soil attached, it probably doesn't need water at that time.	How much Light When it comes to cacti and succulents, the general rule around light is the more, the better! A sunny windowsill is perfect, but succulents can also thrive under artificial lights (or a mix of sunlight and plant lights). One basic guideline wherever you keep your succulents is that you want your plants to cast a strong shadow for at least 3 hours a day.	How to Fertilize Slow-growing cacti and succulents don’t need a lot of feeding, but if you want them to grow bigger, faster, use a general-purpose product in spring and summer. Follow the directions on the packaging to know how much fertilizer to use. Tip: You don't need a special fertilizer for cacti and succulents; any fertilizer formulated for use on indoor plants will do.	The More You Know! Typically considered super easy because they don't need much water, don't need frequent repotting (they have relatively small root systems), and live for decades with good care, you can grow your cacti and succulents in a general-purpose potting mix or one formulated specifically for these plants. (A cacti/succulent mix may be best if you tend to overwater plants.)

When the plant out grows the current container, it is time to repot. To repot the Succulent, gently remove it from its current container and place it into a slightly larger container.
