What are Chickenpox

Chickenpox is a mild but infectious disease that is caused by a virus called varicella zoster.

It can be caught all year round but infections usually peak between March and May. 90% of people are affected before adolescence.(1)

The virus is spread easily through touching broken chickenpox blisters and also by coughs and sneezes.

Children are infectious days before the rash appears until the last blister crusts over. The time from actually catching chickenpox to the first symptoms appearing can be 10-21 days, this is called the incubation period.

It is possible to catch chickenpox more than once but this is very rare. This is because our immune systems make antibodies that fight and overcome the virus. Both then stay in our bodies for the rest of our lives

Symptoms

The first symptoms are often feeling sick, fever, loss of appetite and generally feeling unwell. These symptoms are followed a couple of days later by a red rash that looks like clusters of pimples. The rash can appear anywhere on the body and face including behind their ears, on their scalp and even the soles of their feet.

Within a few hours, these small spots develop into fluid-filled blisters that can be very itchy. This is often the most distressing aspect for both parent and child with parents worrying that the ITCH, SCRATCH, INFECTION cycle might lead to permanent scarring. After a couple of days, the blisters should scab over and dry up but new blisters can appear for several days so it is likely to be 5-6 days between the first spots appearing and the final blister crusting over.
