What is Athletes Foot

Athlete's foot is the common term for a skin infection of the feet or toes caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes. They thrive in warm and moist environments such as changing rooms, showers, shoes and socks, so they are also happy living on your feet where conditions are similar. Athlete's foot usually occurs between your toes, but can also affect the soles and sides of your feet. While fungus causes the main infection, yeasts and bacteria may also develop and cause other symptoms such as smelly feet.

Athlete's foot is very contagious and can spread easily by skin-to-skin contact or through contact with contaminated surfaces and items. Sharing contaminated items such as towels, bed sheets and clothing can spread the infection.

Athlete's foot infection can also spread to other places of your body, causing other fungal infections such as jock itch.

Treatment of Athlete's Foot

A topical antifungal treatment (a treatment placed directly on your skin) can be an easy way to combat your athlete's foot. Antifungal treatments effectively attack the main types of fungi that cause the infection, including dermatophytes. They are easy to penetrate into your skin to relieve your symptoms.

The active ingredients below can be used to treat athlete's foot:

Clotrimazole and Bifonazole (both are antifungals)
Hydrocortisone - a mild corticosteroid that treats symptoms of inflamed athlete's foot when combined with Clotrimazole

When should you see your doctor:

Visit your doctor if you're uncertain about your diagnosis and if your symptoms persist after treatment.
If you are pregnant or elderly, antifungal medication may not be suitable for you and you should make an appointment with your doctor to find the best way to treat athlete's foot.

Canesten Dual Action 1% w/w Cream

This dual action cream is both anti-fungal and an anti-bacterial.

The active anti-fungal ingredient clotrimazole works to eradicate the fungi that causes your athlete's foot. Bacterial growth is known to contribute to bad smells of feet. Canesten Dual Action also had anti-bacterial properties.

It should be used 2-3 times a day

Canesten Bifonazole Once Daily 1% w/w Cream

Canesten Bifonazole Cream is a convenient once daily treatment.

It works in the same way as Canesten Dual Action Cream, and works to eradicate fungi, and provides relief from itching and redness.

But Canesten Bifonazole Cream penetrates deep into your skin and only has to be applied once a day.

Wash and dry feet thoroughly. Apply the cream once a day thinly and evenly to the affected area and rub in gently. Ideally, the cream should be applied at night before going to bed. Treatment should be continued for 2 -3 weeks. If no improvement is seen after 7 days, consult your doctors or pharamacist. Do not use cream to treat nappy rash, vaginal infections, or nail or scalp infections. INDICATIONS Do not use this cream to treat nappy rash, vaginal infections or nail and scalp infections.
