Where does coal come from and how is it made?

The Kishu Binchotan charcoal takes its name from the Kishu region of Japan. Its wood comes from Ubamegashi holm oaks. Our charcoal comes from sustainably and responsibly managed Japanese forests. How it's made : The wood is dried and cut into logs. The wood is then slowly carbonized at a high temperature. The charcoal is then activated by raising the kiln temperature to over 1000°C. Finally, the charcoal is covered with a mixture of soil, sand and ashes to cool down, giving it its sometimes whitish color.

A century-old Japanese tradition

The history of Binchotan goes back several millennia in Japan, where it became a common consumer product as early as the 14th century.

This makes Japan a specialist in the production of activated charcoal. We distribute genuine traditional Japanese Binchotan made from Ubamegashi holm oak, produced in the Kishu region.

Easy to use: just 4 steps
