MAPPILLAI SAMBA (BRIDE GROOM)

It is a wonderful opportunity for our B&B Organics to present Mapilai Samba rice. It has high nutritional values. Vitamin B6 and magnesium is the important factor for our nervous system.

Cultivation

Samba and late Samba is the correct period for the cultivation of mappillai samba. It is the time period between July 15thto January 14th and September 15th to February 14th. Clayey as well as sandy clay soil can be used for the cultivation of this rice.

The total duration of the crop is around 160 days. 120 cm is the actual height of the crop. This rice is usually in red to grey. Coarse grains are presented in this rice.

Mapillai Samba or bridegroom rice or red rice is grown mostly in Tamil Nadu. It is well suited for organic farming as it doesn’t require any pesticides or chemicals and grows well in clayey and loamy soil.

Recipe

Ingredients

Mapillai Samba...............250 gms(1 cup)
Moong daal................80gm(1/4 cup)
Butter.............2 tablespoons
Ginger..............1/4 tsp
Pepper, jeera whole.................1/4 tsp each
Curry leaves.....................some
Cashews.....................a handful

Mappillai Samba pongal

Method

Soak Mapillai samba and moong daal for 2 hrs
Heat two tablespoons of butter in a pressure cooker, add 1/5 tsp ginger, pepper, jeera, curry leaves and cashews.
Saute until flavours are released.

Add four cups of water or 1:4 (rice to water).
Let the water boil then add salt.
Now add the soaked rice and daal and cook for 8-10 whistles.
Serve hot with sambar or chutneys of choice.
