About us

For thousands of years, the health benefits of cod liver oil had been known throughout Northern European cultures. However, in the 1900s cod liver oil production became much more industrialised, and its production reduced its nutritional value. Vitamins were removed, and the chemical structures of fats were altered.

Our mission has been to recreate the highly nutritious raw and unaltered cod liver oil.
What makes our products unique

We release oil through lacto-fermentation of cod livers. The process avoids heat and chemicals, and the resulting oil is completely natural and nutritious.

Are our products high quality

We only use fresh livers from Gadus Morhua (Atlantic Cod) and we do regular testing for quality and safety. As a UK manufacturer, we adhere to strict food safety and quality laws.

What nutrients are in your oil

Our oil is rich in various omega-3 fatty acids and is naturally high in vitamin D & vitamin A. It also contains a whole host of vitamin metabolites and vitamin K.
Is your process identical to historic cultures

The process is almost identical, but we have made some small changes thanks to a better understanding of nutritional sciences. For example, we ferment in a completely oxygen-free environment to prevent oxidative rancidity.

Does your oil need to be kept in the fridge

Yes - once opened it is always best to keep fermented cod liver oil refrigerated.

Are your ingredients organic

Organic certification only applies to farmed foods. As our cod are wild, they cannot be organically certified. All ingredients that are farmed are organic though, such as the lemon oil used to flavour our liquid product.

By releasing the nutrient-rich oil of Atlantic Cod livers through carefully controlled lacto-fermentation, the nutrients in the oil are not only preserved, but enriched. The resulting oil is abundant in a variety of important nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, vitamin A, vitamin K, and many more.

This process was used, but not fully understood, by many cultures throughout history to create a variety of sought-after health fortifying sauces, elixirs, foods, and oils. With our modern understanding of foods science, Armorica has refined this process to keep all the beneficial elements of the process and remove or avoid the undesirable ones. It has taken a number of years to perfect the process, and produce a highly nutritious and natural cod liver oil.

Cod livers are lacto-fermented at ambient temperatures, and no heat is needed for the filtration process. Avoiding the use of heat protects the delicate nutrients in the oil.

Naturally Occurring Nutrients

The oil is abundant in a wide range of omega-3 and other important fatty acids, all in their natural triglyceride form. It is also rich in naturally occurring vitamin A, vitamin D, and vitamin K, all with their naturally occurring co-factors.
