Ampersand’s Scratchbord is made from our premium warp-resistant 1/8" profile Hardbord and coated with an ultra-smooth, highly absorbent, acid-free kaolin clay ground with India ink. Scratchbord is easier to scratch into for clean, crisp details and lines and unlike paper scratchboards it will not rip, tear, bend, or wrinkle.

Only Ampersand uses true high-density hardboard made from US grown and renewable Aspen wood fibers. Made with Ampersand’s 1/8" True Artist Hardbord, the surface is acid-free and non-yellowing.


Add Beautiful Color with Inks Add vibrant color and repair unwanted marks with Ampersand Scratchbord/Claybord Inks. These transparent, lightfast inks are tested to work perfectly with Scratchbord and Claybord. The Black Repair ink allows artists to cover unwanted lines in their artwork.	Frame Without Glass Seal finished Scratchbord with a spray fixative and display without glass.	Truly Archival Every Scratchbord panel is protected by our proprietary Archiva-Seal barrier technology, the most advanced formula for sealing wood that prevents support induced discoloration.	FSC-certified and Artist Safe Central to Ampersand’s mission is to ensure that our products do not harm the environment or the artists who use them. Both our domestic and imported panels are made from FSC-certified forest products that promote sustainable forests and are also free from formaldehyde or harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds), unlike other hardboards and MDF boards.

These clay-coated panels have a final coat of Higgins Waterproof India Ink. Using a scratch knife, hobby knife, or an abrasive like steel wool, artists can remove the ink and expose the white clay underneath. Claybord Black can be used to create exquisite line drawings and black and white illustration.
