10 g Monofilament Test Pen for Diabetics Foot

The foot monofilament test is a diagnostic tool for checking distal symmetric multiple neuropathy.
Used for touch and pressure testing in diabetics patients and is reviewed regularly to prevent future foot ulcers and amputations.
It is an objective and simple tool for screening diabetics for lack of protective sensation.

Foot Monofilament Test

Instructions:

1. the sensory examination of the patient should be carried out in a relatively quiet and comfortable environment. The first test is performed on the patient's wrist with a nylon wire so that the patient understands the purpose of the test.

2. during the examination with nylon wire, make sure that the patient does not see the examination process. Three parts must be examined on each foot: the toe of the big toe, the first and third talus of the sole of the foot. (See picture 1 or picture 4)

3. hold the nylon filament perpendicular to the skin surface at the test site. (Step 1)

4. bend the nylon wire with force, approach, touch the skin and remove the nylon wire.the whole process should take about 2 seconds. (Step 2)

5. When inspecting with nylon wires, avoid areas with ulcers, scars and necrotic tissue. When checking, do not allow the nylon wire to slide on the skin; if it does, repeat the test at the test point.

Ask the patient if they feel pressure when they bend the nylon wire with force. Record the results separately for each test point on both feet.

6. loss of protective sensation = no sensation at any point in both feet.

7. encourage the patient to do the whole examination.
